The International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) is a research organization created in 1987 as a partnership between the Government of Catalonia and the prestigious Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) devoted to the development of numerical methods and computational techniques for advancing knowledge and technology in engineering in applied sciences.
The process of innovation:
CIMNE Tecnología’s mission can be understood through what we call “the Cycle of Ideas”. It covers the whole transit of an idea, from the instant it originates until it is transformed in an industrial and commercial success.
Research: Many scientific advances have been originated in universities, where researchers are exploring new areas of knowledge and new methods. In this way, these seed ideas evolve and become knowledge reflected as research results (books, journal papers, theses, etc. ..)
Development: If these ideas and results are of interest for the market, they may evolve into a prototype. Now it is a specific, tangible and applied solution to a particular topic. Research centers such as CIMNE, count on expert researchers who are focused on applied knowledge and the development of prototypes and targeted solutions. These prototypes make up what we call Stock of Technology.
Innovation: A prototype hardly can be marketed, so there is still a long way to go before one of them becomes a product. Products are developed by specialized companies, the ones able to fully meet their clients’ needs and to propose the best solution from available technologies. This long process requires a professional team and set of resources, notably different from the previous processes. CIMNE Tecnología’s mission is to act in this final stage of the process in order to accelerate it and make it more efficient.
Return: Once on the market, the commercial success of the products and companies should act as feedback within the whole system, by bringing new fresh ideas and challenges.
